Wildlife and conservation
Max Bog is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is nationally important for the range of wetland plants that it supports.

Of particular interest are fine displays of yellow rattle, marsh helleborine, fragrant orchid, meadow sweet and meadow thistle. The reserve is also important for its invertebrate interest and is home to many species of moth, grasshopper and dragonfly.
