| Tread
more lightly |
Bristol and Bath are two
of the top ten most polluted cities in the country because of fuel
emissions
- Walk, bus, cycle, share lifts or join an official car-share
scheme
- Downsize your car - smaller-sized engines produce far fewer
emissions
- Make do without a car at all.

| Don't be
a water waster |
Water is a scarce resource
- over-consumption is leading to many of Britain’s rivers
drying up
- Share a bath or have a shower
- Collect rainwater in a water butt for use in the garden
- Put a brick in your toilet cistern to save water.

 |
| Choose food
for thought |
The way our food is produced
and moved has a major impact on wildlife and the environment
- Buy local - support local food producers and visit farmers’
markets
- Buy organic - organic farming practices are much more
wildlife friendly
- Grow your own - and reduce demand for intensively farmed vegetables.
|
 |
| Don't run
on empty |
Much of our energy comes
from coal, oil, nuclear and gas powered stations which contribute
to global warming
- Switch to a green utility company which invests in renewable
energy
- Switch off the standby button on your television when not in
use
- Don’t overfill the kettle. Save energy by boiling only
the amount you need.
|
 |
| Stop talking
rubbish |
Continued waste generation
will turn our countryside into one big landfill site
- Don’t throw away plastic shopping bags – re-use
them
- Ensure your wood products bear the FSC logo (from sustainably
managed forests)
- For peat’s sake make your own compost!
|
 |
| Make space
for wildlife |
All gardens are potential
nature reserves. If everyone in Britain gardened with wildlife in
mind, a million-acre nature reserve would be created
- Build a pond and help our endangered amphibian population
- Allow your grass to grow a little longer and don’t apply
herbicides
- Put out bird feed, especially during the winter months.

Well, the good news is that there are lots of things
we can do. Simple individual lifestyle changes will go a long way to helping
tackle climate change, globally and locally.
